Nau mai, haere mai

On behalf of the organising committee, I would like to extend a warm welcome to NZ Women in Medicine’s 2024 conference. We return to Wellington with the theme …
Kō te tumanako me haere tahi tatou: hope moves us forward together.

2022’s inaugural conference at Te Papa in Wellington was a huge success. Medical wāhine at all stages and across all areas of the profession came together post-pandemic to connect, celebrate successes, share stories and regroup. Our second conference aims to build on the momentum.

With the challenges which have faced New Zealand’s doctors over the past few years, our purpose is even more relevant; creating a network of meaningful connection to support those who care for others. Together we are stronger, and by coming together we can share ideas and spark conversations which lead to innovation where it matters most.

We will be tackling some of the big ideas – what does success look like, as regards reform of the health system? How do we step up as leaders to address bias and inequities where we see them? How do we develop that leadership and become agents of change? And how do we maintain our health while doing this, in an increasingly difficult work environment?.

Joining us to discuss these issues will be a group of inspiring speakers including Keriana Brooking, Director-General of Health, Dr Diana Sarfati, Sir Peter Gluckman and Rob Campbell. We are expecting some lively debate, and so luckily we have RNZ’s Kathryn Ryan with us to facilitate. Other topics to be explored include the experiences of IMGs (international medical graduates) in Aotearoa, ‘workforce wellness’, building a sustainable and representative workforce, and a look at how we can mitigate medicine’s impacts on climate.

Our workshops were hugely popular last year. Attendees will be able to explore the hui process and Rongoa mai; take part in a creative writing seminar; learn to sing; explore their attitude to money; or simply relax in a yoga class. We like to think we take workforce wellness seriously, and so do our members who have a huge range of interests and talents alongside their professional expertise. These talents will be showcased in the art and craft exhibition which was a fantastic addition last year.

Once again, this would not be possible without the generosity of the sponsors who continue to support our mahi.

We look forward to welcoming you all in May 2024.

Kind regards,
Dr Orna McGinn
Specialist General Practitioner
Chair, NZWIM Conference 2024

Theme

Our theme for 2024 is Kō te tumanako me haere tahi tatou: hope moves us forward together.

Kō te tumanako me haere tahi tatou
Hope moves us forward together

Ma te tumanako
Ma te titiro
Ma te whakarongo
Ma te manawanui
Ma te aroha
Ka taea e matou

By believing and trusting
By having faith and hope
By looking and searching
By listening and hearing
By working and striving together
By patience and perseverance
By doing this with love and compassion
We can succeed

Tumanako is the word for Hope. Hope for equitable futures in partnership, hope for our communities that have faced adversity with covid and devastating weather events, and hope that our new political health environment keeps people at the forethought – both ourselves and our patients.

Tumanako can also mean expectations. What do we as wahine expect of ourselves? What do we expect of our work environments and the broader context of our mahi? And how do we plan to move forward together knowing that change is constant. This years conference aims to explore these questions and ideas, a chance to hui, whakawhanaungatanga and move together in Tumanako.
